Some thoughts:

1: I don’t respect cannonball, period. There is fun speeding on deserted roads, or where someone can otherwise guarantee the safety of bystanders. Never cared much for personal safety. Blasting down highways like that is one lane change without checking mirrors away from disaster.

2: T hat being said, look at all the snobs coming out. “It shouldn’t count” “it will always have an asterisk”. Alex Roy shouldn’t even GET an opinion. Pretty sure they are pissed that some bums beat them with walmart gas cans and duct tape.

3. This could turn out very poorly for them. Would have waited at least a year, until we were in the inevitable “remember how bad that whole quarantine thing was? Ha ha” phase. Feel like this is going to end up in prosecution, when this normally slips under the radar.

4. Ed is the only one that seems reasonable about this. Cannonball is always dangerous and stupid. You could always “ hit a truck full of medical supplies and inadvertently kill people” (it’ s also an incredibly- unlikely-bordering-on-impossible scenario. You would be way more likely to hit a car filled with kids ) . What about the pandemic has changed any aspect other than in poor sportsmanship and even poorer taste ? The holier-than-thou attitude is ridiculous.

Possibly transmitting this virus to rural places that didn’t currently have it. They went from the current hot spot of the virus through the middle of America to another large city that hasn’t experienced as bad of an outbreak yet.

The standpoint of “it shouldn’t count because it doesn’t follow the rules/the spirit of it” is absurd. Ed’s point is correct, I imagine that everyone is bellyaching because someone set a new record, they’re just looking for an excuse to discount it because they didn’t do it.

It’s an illegal event. You either end it or accept the fact that anything goes.

There needs to be some defining characteristics in order for a record to make sense. It just so happens that nobody ever specidied that the record makes no mention on traffic conditions or national events/holidays/ ect. So they are still complaining about nothing. The rules are passenger car from hotel to hotel using public roads. Thats it.

Especially when someone like Alex who used a fucking plane to fly ahead and give him spotting directions is acting like it’s bad that these guys did it more like a traditional 70s attempt. No radar jamming paint, fifteen screens, drivers coordinating to be pulled over like Ed says is the best way, but just a pure drive. And honestly prob safer than a normal one because there’s much less traffic.

They all sound really butthurt when it’s all an illegal bad taste competition anyways.

I said I dont think, not that I don’t know. Its not as if they are getting much physical or close contact, or that they are even sick to begin with. So,maybe contaminated surfaces like a gas pump? Whats the length of time it can survive on surfaces?

My ass is sitting at home, because that’s what the people who know what they’re doing told me to do. I do have a degree in health sciences, taught advanced biology for almost a decade and am getting a masters degree in environmental resource management, but that definitely doesn’t qualify me to ignore the advice of public health officials. So you can tell me precicely how high of a chance someone has of spreading a viral infection while stuck in a sealed automobile for 28 hours only stopping at gas stations practicing social distancing? Presuming of course the average rate of infected individuals.

Lotta unknowns, but based purely on infectons, at a population of 8.62 million with 146,316 cases total reporet (with some having already recovered ) you are already down to 1.7% chance of infection without factoring in that their activity of choice puts them in extremely limited contact for viral transmission. We are talking tenths if not hundreths of a percent. What is your level of statistical significance?.

Look, bro, you said there’s no difference doing a run during a pandemic than there is any other time. I pointed out the blatantly obvious difference. You decided to offer your opinion on the chances of them transmitting a virus, not me, despite knowing fuck all about epidemiology. Because I know I’m not an expert in epidemiology, I deferred to the experts, who have told people in NYC to stay the fuck at home.

The fact you think any of the transmission data we have right now is comprehensive shows me your education on this subject stems mostly from watching cable news. Citing per capita confirmed cases without citing how many people have been tested for a virus that asymptomatic in a good deal of people, and drawing any conclusion from your “research”, is pretty ignorant. Trying to call people out while making such ignorant assumptions is peak ignorance.

Like I said, I’m not an expert, and defer to public health officials’ expertise. Based on where you appear to be as far as understanding even basic statistics, I suggest you do the same.

A someone who took latin during my undergrad, lawyers are really the only people who understand how to use it.

Ill play your game: part of my college education was statistics. And, as I explained, those are very, very favorable to your argument, and they still suck.

So in essence, i have been able to empirically disprove your argument. Even if double the people are currently infected than reported, you still have a 3.4% chance these douchebros are even carrying the disease, before you add additional variables like transmission rates. Which still begs question: why are you more concerned with this virus than you are about a vastly more likely circumstance of them clipping another car, and killing someone in a traffic accident?

Its like saying, you shouldnt do a cannonball because your car might catch on fire and kill a firefighter. Yes, that could happen. It is so incredibly unlikely that to concern yourself is akin to fear mongering.
